In the period March 13 - 18, 1986 the CCD-System of the 192 cm SAAO telescope at Sutherland was used to obtain 137 images with the GIOTTO-HMC- and the IHW-filters for near nucleus studies. The spatial resolution varied between 350 and 1000 km in a region of 144,000×205,000 km2 thus permitting excellent imaging before, during and after the GIOTTO fly-by. The CCD-observations permitted absolute photometry of the coma with 23 different filters and morphological studies as detection of jets, informations about the nucleus rotation and the extension of dust and gas (neutrals and ions) around the nucleus.
