Several elements of Eddington make the specification for the CCDs unusual compared with a standard imaging application. For example, image sharpness is scarcely an issue due to the defocussing, but stability is much more important than usual due to the requirement for high accuracy photometry detecting very small (~10-4) variations in intensity. There are also trade-offs brought about by the different requirements of the asteroseismology and planet-finding parts of the mission. These various trade-offs are described. In addition, preliminary results are shown from a lab run simulating a planetary transit by changing the intensity of a defocussed point source on a CCD.
