CCD camera observations in R are reported for the brightest member galaxies of 35 rich Abell clusters. All the galaxies in the sample are either known or potential X-ray sources. The object of this work is to provide a data base for comparison with the existing and planned X-ray observations. Surface brightness profiles are presented and fitted to Hubble law. The authors attempt to discriminate between cD-type galaxies and normal brightest cluster member ellipticals in so far as this is possible with an early generation CCD camera. Integrated magnitudes at metric radii are presented and compared with existing photometry. Revised X-ray luminosities are derived for these clusters, but no new obvious correlations with optical properties are found.
