Cosmology: Theory, Gravitational Lensing
Scientific paper
A basic goal of the theory of gravitational lensing is to investigate the differences between single- and multiple-plane lens models. We show that caustics arising from two point masses on distinct planes with continuous matter and shear display a rich and striking variety of geometric forms. This includes caustic features that cannot be generated by single-plane multiple-point-mass lens systems with continuous matter and shear, and double-plane two-point-mass lenses. We highlight and discuss these distinctions through several examples of critical curves and caustics.
