It is suggested that gas-composition changes in a region of diffusion equilibrium in the upper atmosphere can be caused by thermospheric circulation alone. Numerical calculations are carried out using a three-dimensional model for the composition and dynamics of the thermosphere, with allowance for mean mass transfer, and molecular and turbulent diffusion. These calculations show that gas-composition changes connected with changes in the turbulent diffusion coefficient are localized in a region below a height of 140 km.
