An envelope in a category is a construction that generalizes the operations of "exterior completion", like completion of a locally convex space. Dually, an imprint generalizes operations of "interior enrichment", like bornologification of a locally convex space. We define envelopes and imprints in abstract categories, give some examples, and describe some applications for the categories of stereotype spaces and stereotype algebras.
