The Hipparcos (High Precision Parallax Collecting) satellite, to be launched by the European Space Agency in 1986, will be able to measure the positions of 100,000 stars with a far greater accuracy than earth-based telescopes. Various procedures for determining stellar distances are discussed, including photographic determination of trigonometric parallaxes and main-sequence fitting, and by overcoming the limitations of earth-based measurements, the orbiting telescope will provide observations of the whole sky. Details of the optical system of the telescope are given, noting the 30 cm apeture, the spin axis kept at a constant inclination of 40 degrees to the Sun and the seven week revolution around the Sun. The satellite will provide more accurate basic data for a much-improved picture of the structure and dynamics of the Galaxy.
