This edition of the catalog of QSOs covers literature published prior to Dec. 31, 1974. Criteria (acknowledged 'mainly subjective' because of difficulties in classifying objects at small redshift) for including or excluding objects are indicated. The rules followed in arrangement of the catalog are indicated. Some inaccurate information persisting in the literature is noted (PKS 0056-17, z equals 2.125 is spurious; PHL 1305 and PKS 0226-038 are identical). Information on privately circulated updated computer printouts of the catalog is included.
