The Cassini spacecraft on its way to Saturn flew by Jupiter, the closest approach being on 30 December 2000. During an approximately 3 months long period the spacecraft crossed the huge Jovian shock for more than forty times. The outstanding results concerning the bow shock structure are being published elsewhere. The most important finding was that the onset of ion thermalisation was a clear shock signature supported by an electrostatic wave signal; thermalisation can be used as a signature of the shock location even in those cases when the magnetic field and wave data are rather smeared in the distant flank. In this presentation we focus on the plasma data collected in the foot regions by the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS), the magnetometer, and the radio and plasma wave science (RPWS) instrument flying onboard of Cassini. Cassini encountered both quasiperpendicular and quasiparallel bow shocks due to the highly variable magnetic field direction present in the solar wind. In the foot region the reflected ions were below CAPS sensitivity limit; their presence however can be made evident from the field data and from the observed changes in the solar wind. We present the here the detailed investigation of the bulk plasma properties for the foot region of six bow shock crossings. For quasiparallel shocks there were periodic variations in the plasma temperature, in correlation with other bulk plasma parameters and the variations of the magnetic field and waves. Such structures are not characteristic for the foot of quasiperpendicular shocks. The observations will be compared to one-dimensional hybrid code models.
