The Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) is a Fourier transform spectrometer on the Cassini orbiter that is sensitive to planetary thermal radiation from 10 cm-1 to 1400 cm-1 (1 mm to 7{μ}m), with an apodized spectral resolution as high as 0.5 cm-1. We summarize the results from CIRS observations of Jupiter made during the Cassini swingby in December 2000. These include the first detailed retrieval of the stratospheric temperature and zonal wind fields, and the discovery of an intense equatorial jet at 4 mbar; global maps of thermal waves in the troposphere and stratosphere, with several of the stratospheric waves exhibiting westward drifts; constraints on the vertical structure of the northern auroral hot spot in the stratosphere; the first detection of the methyl radical and diacetylene; and the meridional profile of CO_2, exhibiting an enhanced concentration at high southern latitudes. We also discuss planned observations of Saturn and Titan, beginning in 2004. CIRS offers a unique combination of broad spectral coverage, high spectral resolution, high sensitivity, high spatial resolution, and an orbiting platform that permits detailed mapping of these bodies over the four years of the nominal mission. We summarize important goals for CIRS studies pertaining to the meteorology and composition of Saturn and Titan.
