A possible connection between twisted and automorphic fields and the modern spectral theory of automorphic functions is discussed. A realization of these considerations for manifolds M(n) and real scalar fields on them is addressed. The results of de Witt et al. (1979) about evaluating the Casimir effect for topologically inequivalent real scalar fields on M(n) are recalled and their concrete form is given. The vacuum energy density to order lambda is calculated for all types of real scalar field in M(n) with the help of Jackiw's (1974) results on the two-loop effective potential for phi-4 theory in Minkowski space-time.
