A semirelativistic theoretical model is developed for the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric shell subjected to both gravitational forces and repulsive forces like those predicted by the theory of Casimir-effect vacuum fluctuations. It is assumed that the Casimir energy density does not gravitate, so that the Casimir-force effect must be added by hand as an extra term in the radial equation of motion. It is predicted that a shell cannot collapse by this mechanism beyond a specific minimum radius of the order of its Compton wavelength. It is noted that the present ad hoc approach is not based on the equations of general relativity and therefore does not conflict with gravitational singularity theorems.
