The magnitude threshold for earthquake focal mechanism and depth studies was lowered as far as mb = 4.7 by exploiting the surface wave portion of seismograms recorded at Worldwide Standardized Seismic Station Network stations. The initial phase was calculated and the Rayleigh wave phase velocities between the events and the observing stations were determined. A plane layered, laterally homogeneous, oceanic Earth model for the source region in the theoretical Rayleigh wave calculations was assumed, as well as the introduction of a subducting lithospheric slab. The tectonic implications of these focal mechansism results remain independent of the Earth model chosen for the source region. The focal mechanisms determined for the northeastern Caribbean plate boundary indicate that this displacement is at present accommodated along this boundary by a complex oblique subduction process. The mechanisms determined for the southern Caribbean plate boundary and the intra-Caribbean plate region indicate this displacement is being accommodated over a broad zone of internal deformation which extends from northern South America into the interior of the Caribbean plate.
