Using the Phoenix on Gemini we propose to observe a sample of carbon stars in the LMC in four different wavelength regions at high spectral resolution and with high S/N. The spectra will provide CO, CN, and C_2 and atomic lines from which elemental and isotopic C, N, and O abundances and metal abundances will be derived by an approach similar to that previously used for Galactic field carbon stars (Lambert et al. 1986). We will then be able to calibrate lower resolution spectra of carbon stars in other Local Group galaxies. The observational study of carbon stars is a key to understanding late evolutionary stages and nucleosynthesis of low mass stars.
