Calculations of the intensities of the transition bands of the CO using spectrometer data from Mariner 6, 7, and 9, and the Viking 1 and 2 probes of the Martian atmosphere are presented. The computations were performed to investigate the validity of models of the Martian atmosphere which assert that CO and O are formed by radiative dissociation of CO2 in the upper Martian atmosphere, then descend to form H2O and CO2 in the lower atmosphere in reactions with OH radicals. The calculations were carried out as a function of altitude, and it was found that, if CO is considered to be in thermodynamic equilibrium, then there is good agreement between the measurements of intensity made by Mariner 9 and data on concentration and temperature taken by Viking 1.
