A model to interpret the supernova 1987A infrared spectra is proposed. Many observations allowed the identification of CO in the supernova spectra. The report considers that the CO forms part of the supernova ejecta and an analysis of the first overtone band using Blotzmann population statistics is presented. The model reproduces well the spectra obtained on days 192 and 255 and implies the presence of about 0.00005 of the solar mass of CO by day 255. By day 284 the fit is less good, due to increasingly prominent emission from other species, possibly in combination with the breakdown of the Blotzmann distribution.
