J = 1-0 emission of CO (at 2.6 mm wavelength) has been detected toward the galaxy Maffei 2, permitting an unobscured study of its inner structure. Although principally concentrated toward the nucleus, the CO emission is observed along the galactic disk at least as far as 6 kpc from the center. The mass in molecular clouds within 750 pc of the nucleus is approximately twice that of the same region in our Galaxy, and the ratio of masses in molecular and atomic gas decreases rapidly away from the nucleus. A partial rotation curve is used to discuss the mass and fractional gas content of the galaxy. Maffei 2 is recommended as an object for further study by infrared techniques. An apparent correlation between the presence of strong central CO sources in galaxies and the brightness of their disk continuum emission is noted.
