Results are presented for observations of the 2.-6-mm rotational emission line of carbon monoxide in the central regions of five external galaxies (M31, M51, M63, M82, NGC 253). Values are given for the observed intensities and velocities, and upper limits are established for the corrected antenna temperatures in CO for six additional galaxies. (C-13)O was also detected in M82. The total velocity widths (about 350 km/s) in M82, NGC 253, and M31 are found to be similar to the observed dispersion in molecular clouds at the center of the Milky Way, and small velocity dispersions are seen in M51, a nearly face-on system. The total mass in the form of molecular clouds near the centers is estimated to be of the order of 200 million solar masses within one beamwidth and probably a few billion solar masses for an entire galaxy.
