JHK infrared photometry is given for all 57 of the very red stars (including C- and M-type stars) discovered by Demers et al. in the outer haloes and intercloud region of the Magellanic Clouds. The colours, magnitudes and spectral types of these stars are similar to those of stars in intermediate-age clusters in the Clouds, and suggest an age of 1 to a few Gyr for these field objects. The ratio of C- to M-type stars is discussed briefly.
