The capabilities and design concept of the STIS will be shown after simplifying to reduce cost. Most of the scientific capability and intrinsic sensitivity was retained. The spectral and spatial multiplexing was reduced, so that some observing times will be longer, but the multiplexing advantage is still orders of magnitude higher than the first generation spectrographs. The wavelength range is 115-1000nm over 4 bands, with spectral resolving powers between 50 and 100,000. Camera modes are retained for target acquisition. Correction for spherical aberration and astigmatism is included. The detectors now have a format of 1024 x 1024 pixels, instead of 2048 x 2048 pixels. The 115-170nm range is covered by a CsI MAMA detector, the 165-310nm range by a Cs2Te MAMA, and the 305-555nm and 550-1000nm ranges by a single CCD.
