Through a natural filtration of the Chevalley-Eilenberg differential complex
for real nilpotent Lie algebras a spectral sequence that converge to the Lie
algebra cohomology arises. From this sequence we define what we call
intermediate cohomology; we give examples and study its properties. Finally we
compute it for all nilpotent Lie algebras up to dimension six.
