Even the question is heresy. Poisson showed that the gravitational potential has only minima and saddle points. Here I discuss the, non-Newtonian, sinusoidal potential φ = - (GM/r) Cos[2πr/λ], where λ = 400 pc is a proposed universal constant. [1] The associated second order linear differential equation adds a new term to the usual one. Now we have Δ φ + (2π /λ) 2 φ = 4πρ. This equation suggests Helmholtz and sound, not Poisson and gravity.
The crossing time problem is a vexing one for the theory of star formation. How can a giant molecular cloud having internal turbulent velocities of only a few pc/Myr, but a width of 50 pc know that "all at once" it is to condense into stars? In the words of another scientist, it appears "that some kind of external triggering must be involved". I shall show how the bumps in the sinusoidal potential provide the external trigger.
