Results of an experimental investigation of the spectra of submicrometer silicon monoxide grains are presented. The grains prepared from commercial SiO are prepared according to the Jena IR spectroscopy program for particulates of cosmic importance. A comparison of the laboratory spectra with those derived from Mie calculations using published refractive indices of bulk SiO reveals a fundamental discrepancy concerning the number and position of the bands. It is therefore thought that the experimental SiO grains change their internal structural state through the heating involved in the pressing of the KBr pellets in which the grains are embedded.
