In reporting the detection of an IR background in the 2-5-micron waveband which has an approximately blackbody spectrum with a temperature of about 1500 K, Matsumoto et al. claim its intensity to be too high to be explainable in terms of zodiacal light, interplanetary dust, low mass halo stars, or galactic emission. It is presently proposed that their suggestion of the intensity's derivation from a generation of pregalactic, population III stars is only plausible if the stars begin forming at a redshift exceeding 40, with a density parameter of about unity and a mass in the 100-100,000 solar masses range. At such high density, overenrichment of the background medium with heavy elements could only be avoided if they collapsed to black holes after their nuclear burning phase. Black holes could generate the entire background only if they have a density parameter of about 0.1, and a mass too large to have had stellar precursors.
