The absorption of a neutrino on a nucleus induces a transition in which a nucleon within the nuclear structure changes its isospin and an electron is emitted. It would be desirable to determine the nuclear matrix elements of this process from beta decay measurements, but some of the transitions involved for existing and proposed neutrino detectors are not accessible to beta decay. The (p, n) reaction can induce the appropriate transitions with almost no momentum transfer to the nucleus. Thus, (p, n) measurements hold a promise of providing needed information to predict neutrino absorption cross sections. The use of this technique is reviewed.
