The present state of knowledge of the chronology of comets is discussed. It is noted that the development of remote Ar-40, Ar-39 dating, using a transuranic neutron source such as Cf-252 is possible, but would probably compromise experiments far more appropriate to rendezvous science. Based on the evidence from interstellar dust in meteorites, it is concluded that some of the constituents will probably predate the formation of the solar system. Other methods of dating include the comparison of absolute clocks with the meteorite/solar system age mark of about 4.56 Ga; the study of extinct radionuclides to gain information about the accretion and preaccretion stage; and the study of cosmic ray exposure clocks and the chronology of possible aqueous alteration products within the comet. Ion probe techniques are also discussed and a chart is provided which presents some useful numbers for dating small meteoritic samples.
