Coherent backscattering has been suggested as a contributor to the opposition effect observed in planetary regoliths and in particulate materials studied in the laboratory (Hapke, 1990 and Muinonen, 1990). Hapke discusses specific behavior for the reflected component of polarized monochromatic light incident on a particulate surface. We performed goniometer measurements of the angular scattering properties of particulate materials under illumination by monochromatic light. We found behavior that is consistent with the hypothesis that coherent backscattering is the principal contributor to the opposition effect (Hapke et al., 1993, Nelson et al., 1995). We have observed this in chemically homogeneous powders as well as natural substances including lunar samples.
