The Baldwin et al (1978) suggestion that QSO emission line equivalent widths, such as those for C IV, can be used as the QSO's luminosity indicator, together with the alternative claim by Jones and Jones (1980) that the line flux may be employed as a 'standard candle', are examined. It is established that the competing claims follow from differences in these authors' approaches to the statistical analysis involved, and that the correlation observed between emission line equivalent width and continuum luminosity could be primarily due to the variability of QSOs with flat radio spectra. Since it is for the case of such QSOs that the correlation is most pronounced, it is concluded that the claim of a 'standard candle' is in their case unjustified
