Menzel's (1975) scrutiny of the fundamentals of relativity, leading to the conclusion that the concept of the event horizon is inconsistent and that black holes cannot exist is critically analyzed. It is shown that Menzel's work does not justify a re-examination of the concepts concerning the global structure of space-time of spherical symmetry and the possibility in principle of the existence of black holes.
