The use of Hipparcos satellite trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate distance scales for planetary nebulae and faint and distant stars is discussed. Ground based trigonometric and spectroscopic parallaxes and statistical estimates of distance are imprecise and show little agreement. Stars observed by Hipparcos for calibration should have envelopes between 2 and 3 arcsec size, with greatest magnitude = 12, when the background sky brightness = 190 stars of magnitude 10 per sq deg. Distance must be 500 parsec. Fifteen objects meet these specifications.
