There are two related and fundamental aspects of starformation and evolution which can be studied uniquely withHST/WFPC2 data for nearby open clusters: calibration ofstellar isochrone ages independently of stellar structuremodels, and the dependence of the stellar luminosity - andhence mass - function on metallicity and environment. We haveproven that HST photometry of nearby open clusters candetermine the white dwarf luminosity function to its limit, and hence calibrate evolutionary and cooling age scalesdirectly. The same observations determine the M dwarfluminosity function. Combination of our (metal-rich) opencluster data with HST data for (metal-poor) globular clustersis determining the stellar luminosity and mass function over 2dex in abundance. Cycle 4 data were allocated to provetechnical feasibility: we will complete the experiment, provide independent robust calibrations of stellarevolutionary models, and quantify the dependence of thestellar luminosity function on metallicity. HST data arenecessary for this project since only HST has the resolutionto distinguish cluster white dwarfs from the far more abundantbackground galaxies with similar colors.
