Electron densities measured with the EISCAT radar are compared with rocket measurements obtained during the MAP/WINE campaign and with ionosonde soundings. It is shown that, with the EISCAT radar, electron densities can be measured to an absolute accuracy of about 10 percent. In order to maintain this accuracy, frequent comparison with ionosonde soundings is necessary.
