We request time to perform both photometric calibration tests and photometric characterization of stars, galaxies, and QSOs in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) grizy filter system. Specifically, we will once again deploy a direct imaging CCD system to the CTIO/Yale/SMARTS 1m telescope. The detector will be identical to the CCDs that will eventually be used in the Dark Energy Camera (DECam). Unlike previous engineering runs with this DECam CCD system on the 1m telescope, this time we will also have DES grizy 4-in filters. These will be the first complete set of DES filters manufactured and are expected to be delivered in January 2010. The main goals of this run will be to measure transformations between the SDSS and DES filter systems; to begin calibration of a set of standard stars in the DES grizy filters (especially in DES z and y, which are noticeably different from other z and y filters), and to characterize the DES grizy colors of various astrophysical objects (stars, galaxies, QSOs).
