A method whereby the motion of individual fluid particles is followed with respect to pressure and viscosity forces is applied to a study of the fragmentation of an isothermally collapsing cloud. It is noted that if the mass in an accretion disk exceeds the Jeans mass, several accreting cores are formed, often yielding binary and hierarchical multiple systems. The resulting mass spectrum can then be determined by a hierarchy of accreting objects, such that each object has several smaller ones associated with it.
