Our calculations of stellar population synthesis indicate that the Galaxy contains (depending on the assumptions) some 1000 to 40,000 X-ray binaries with a black hole (BH) component. For the most likely set of assumptions, this number is equal to about 15,000. Most of these objects are transient systems (dormant for most of the time). The distribution of the orbital periods of the expected population agrees reasonably well with the observed one based on the sample of ~30 known galactic BH X-ray binaries with determined periods. The expected distribution of the BH masses does not agree and our calculations predict too many low mass (2-3 Msolar) BHs.
