Results of calculations of the coupling coefficients and the integral generation multiplicity of the meson component by two different methods. In the first method the calculations were performed in accordance with models and calculated expressions proposed earlier, assuming that in each interaction act only pions are generated. The second method employs statistical tests on the basis of a one-dimensional model of a nuclear-cascade process in the atmosphere, assuming that all the newly generated particles are pions, and making a number of other assumptions regarding the number of particles generated, the secondary-particle spectrum, the neutral-pion spectrum, and the angular distribution of the pions. The aspects taken into account when considering a nuclear-cascade process in the atmosphere are reviewed. Coupling coefficients are obtained for the nucleon component at sea level and for the meson component at various observation levels.
