Recently in-situ D/H measurements have been made by the Galileo probe mass spectrometer (GPMS) in Jupiter's atmosphere [Neimann et al., 1996]. An earlier tentative detection of the deuterium Lyman-alpha line emission was made on the dawn limb of Jupiter using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrometer on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on the 5th July, 1993 [Ben-Jaffel et al., 1994]. We estimate the problem of the abundance and airglow intensities of D in the thermosphere making using of photochemical and radiative transfer models that allow for the coupling of the H and D lines. We assume that the mixing ratio of D to H_2 in the deep atmosphere is given by that determined by the GPMS instrument and that the D line is excited by both solar and planetary H Lyman-alpha . We present results showing the effect of eddy diffusion, and the temperature profile on the D abundance and on the expected D emission which is of order of several hundred Rayleighs.
