The effects of a partial ring current system in the magnetosphere on the cosmic ray cutoff rigidities at Kiel, Jungfraujoch and Rome was examined by trajectory calculations in a perturbed geomagnetic field model. The results show that the main cone cutoff, the effective cutoff and the Stoermer cutoff can be lowered significantly. The maximum effects occur when the center meridian of the current system passes through the stations or is slightly east of it. The relative cutoff changes are largest for Kiel, smallest for Rome. Their dependences on parameters of the current system are compared with theoretical results for axially symmetric currents.
