Earth Rotation: Tidal Effects, Earth Rotation: Variations
Scientific paper
Under the effect of the luni-solar tide-generating potential the Earth deforms. The viscous elasticity of its mantle causes a lag in this deformation behind the tidal force, which contributes to the secular deceleration of the Earth's rotation. The Hamiltonian method is applied to calculate the Earth's deformation. Then, taking the viscous elasticity into account, the authors calculate the secular deceleration and its effect on the periodic (zonal) variations of the Earth's rotation.
