The Maxwell stress tensor in MHD turbulence is calculated by exploiting symmetry. An expression is obtained for the force acting on a plasma in the presence of both isotropic and anisotropic magnetic inhomogeneities. It is shown that negative pressure can appear in the anisotropic case. Negative pressure then causes a modulation instability. The reaction of magnetic inhomogeneities to large-scale plasma flow is calculated.
