A 'standard' model of ellipsoidal brightness variations caused by a tidally distorted star in a binary system that contains a degenerate compact object is adopted. Theoretical light curves, variability amplitudes, and minimum-light differences are calculated. Numerical results are presented for different values of the five governing parameters.
