A theoretical analysis shows that the aperture coding technique makes it possible to substantially improve the angular resolution of a gamma-ray telescope. Even in a system where the coding mask is relatively close to the detector, the improvement in angular resolution is at least six-fold. However, this improvement is accompanied by the loss of the telescope's ability to isolate faint discrete sources above the isotropic background.
