The concentration of O(+) ions relative to electrons at a height of 170 km is calculated for specific values of solar ionizing radiation intensity, solar zenith angle, and local time, as well as for various seasons, at midlatitudes. Empirical data on solar ionizing radiation and the Jacchia-71 atmospheric model are used in the computation along with corrections for semiannual variations in the neutral oxygen concentration and seasonal variations in the molecular oxygen concentration. Comparison with observations shows that the relative O(+) concentration is obtained with an accuracy of up to + or - 15%.
