Radiation-transfer simulations were carried out for HCN with the aim of explaining the anomalous relative intensities of the hyperfine components in the J = 1-0 transition observed in cold interstellar clouds. Monte Carlo calculations were carried out for a spherically symmetric cloud with density falling as n(r) varies as the inverse of r squared.
