The theory, properties, and uses of various high band and wide pass band for infrared filters and filter combinations for astromomical applications are presented. Scattering, selective transmission absorption and reflection, the Fabry Perot interferometer, and grating techniques are employed. Special materials are used which were developed for scattering filters (black polyethylene, diamond dust in suspension or sedimented). Emphasis is given to the development of a filter combination for the MPE balloon experiment (70 to 100 micron and 100 to 150 micron region). It employs residual reflection filters as well as a scattering filter and enables 62% maximum transmission to be achieved in the KJ band with a stop band transmission of less than 1%.
