The statistical properties of binary stars are key for understanding their formation process and/or their evolution. Methods dedicated to the following problems are presented~: Simulation of a sample of binary stars. Derivation of the distribution of mass ratios of single-lined spectroscopic binaries. Correction of the distributions of mass ratios and of periods of spectroscopic binaries for selection effects. Calculation of the distribution of mass ratios by taking into account the selection effects for a sample of visual binaries. Calculation of the distribution of projected separations by taking into account the selection effects for a sample of visual binaries. Some statistical properties of binary stars are presented and briefly discussed.
