The authors have conducted an investigation of the inner part (≡2 - 3arcsec) of red giant star envelopes through observations of emission in the 4.6 μm vibration rotation lines of CO produced by resonance scattering. A novel experimental technique, employing an annular aperture to mask the central infrared continuum source, was used to obtain line profiles at a mean angular offset of 2.7±0.7arcsec from the center. The results for the carbon-rich Mira variable IRC+10216 are presented.
