Carbon and helium abundances and isotopic compositions of high-pressure CO2 fluid inclusions in ultramafic xenoliths from the Hawaii, Reunion, and Kerguelen oceanic hotspots were measured to examine the extent to which He and C are separated by igneous process and to determine whether or not the 'undegassed' isotopic character of hotspot He extends to carbon. The helium composition of the samples was found to span most of the global range for mantle products (He-3/He-4 ratios vary from 8 to 24 x atmospheric ratio), and the measured C/He-4 ratios suggest that the upper mantle carbon content is probably in the range 50-250 ppm C. The results suggest that He and C behave similarly in the mantle, and provide constraints on mantle carbon contents and recycling.
