The C-Band All Sky Survey (C-BASS) will map the polarized synchrotron sky at 5GHz to sub-millikelvin sensitivity. This map will allow for synchrotron foreground subtraction from future CMB studies. The Northern sky will be mapped from Owens Valley, California, in 2009, with the Southern sky to follow from South Africa.
Preparations for the Northern survey are now well underway. Groundwork at the site includes the arrival and commissioning of the 6.1m telescope, fabrication of the new subreflector and baffles, and the development of RFI mitigation strategies. Meanwhile, construction of the receiver, including both the RF front-end and the digital back-end, and development of observing strategies is nearing completion.
The C-BASS project is a collaboration between Caltech/JPL in the US, Oxford and Manchester Universities in the UK, and Rhodes University and the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in South Africa. It is funded by the NSF (AST-0607857) and the participating institutions.
