Self-absorption in (C-13)O emission has been found in the course of a study of high-resolution (C-12)O, (C-13)O, and C(O-18) profiles in the Rho Ophiuchi dark cloud complex. These observations suggest very large column densities of hydrogen (i.e., 3 x 10 to the 23rd per sq cm or greater than 100 mag) at the position of the (C-13)O self-absorption. C(O-18) observations indicate that large column-density gradients exist in the source. The high spatial gas density implied by the observations suggests that the gas and dust are in thermal equilibrium. However, this is not consistent with FIR observations unless a very large column (greater than 400 mag) of cold dust exists in the outer portions of the cloud.
